Boys’ basketball: Zafir Williams scores 37 points in Long Beach Poly victory

Long Beach Poly is getting healthy and turning loose Zafir Williams.
The 6-foot-6 junior scored a career-high 37 points on Monday night to lift the Jackrabbits past Long Beach Millikan, 93-68, in Moore League game. It avenged an earlier loss to the Rams and improved Poly’s record to 15-8 overall and 8-1 in league.
“We’re getting better,” Coach Shelton Diggs said.
And getting healthy. Although Drew Buggs didn’t play Monday, he returned from a knee injury last week. Poly is one of the candidates for the Open Division playoffs. It ends the regular season with a game against Compton on Feb. 9 for the league title.
In the Mission League, Shacquille Dawkins scored 27 points and DJ McDonald added 19 to help Alemany (18-6, 8-1) defeat Harvard-Westlake, 73-69. Alemany is in a virtual tie for first place with Crespi (7-1). The Warriors opened a 19-point lead in the third quarter, but Wolfgang Novogratz, who finished with 18 points, sparked a comeback for Harvard-Westlake. Carter Begel, injured in a spill last month, entered the game in the third quarter and also aided the Wolverines.
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Chaminade, 50-48. Chibueze Jacobs had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
In the Coliseum League, Crenshaw defeated Locke, 53-39.
In the Eastern League, South Gate defeaed Huntington Park, 57-55. Cameron Ybarra had 18 points and David Mixon 11. South Gate is 8-0 in league.
In the Western League, Jeron Artest made a shot at the buzzer to give Palisades a 71-69 win over University. Westchester defeated Hamilton, 68-31.
In the East Valley League, Grant won its 13th consecutive game with an 85-64 win over Monroe. Alex McQueen had 24 points and 15 rebounds.
In the Pacific League, Burroughs defeated Arcadia, 65-45. Angelo Solis had 19 points. Pasadena defeated Crescenta Valley, 63-44. Bryce Hamilton had 19 points and Tyrek Adams 17.
St. Bonaventure defeated Buena, 77-49. Thomas Frank scored 26 points and Darius Vines had 12 points and 10 assists.
