Birmingham’s football team has taken a second hit.
Ryan Mendoza, expected to be the starting quarterback, said Friday he has decided not to play football this season to focus on baseball.
Mendoza said he wants to prepare for his college career at Long Beach State. Mendoza is considered the City Section’s top defensive catcher.
Gabriel Cruz is expected to take over as the Patriots’ quarterback.
Mendoza’s decision comes after standout running back Sterling Salguero checked out of school. He’s expected to transfer to Calabasas, Coach Jim Rose said.
