Football: Jeff Engilman comes out of retirement to be assistant coach
- Share via
Jeff Engilman, a former head coach at Sylmar and Arleta who retired in 2010, has ended his retirement. He has joined the Golden Valley coaching staff to be an assistant under new Coach Dan Kelley, who was an assistant to Engilman at Sylmar and Arleta.
“I’m tryng to help the kid out,” said Engilman, 63.
Engilman lives in Acton, so the trip to Santa Clarita is even closer than his days driving to Arleta. He insists he’s calm, cool and mellow, hardly what he used to be during his coaching days.
These days, no one stays retired. Bill Redell, 72, just returned as coach at Oaks Christian.
Redell said of Engilman, “Tell him to call me when he’s 72.”
Redell and Engilman both wish their favorite play _ the fumblerooski _ was still legal in high school.
Engilman said he planned to help Kelley for this year.
