Eagle Rock had won four consecutive City Section girls’ water polo championships and 83 consecutive matches against City teams dating back to 2011. That didn’t deter Birmingham, which beat the odds and the Eagles, 8-6, in overtime to win the title at Valley College on Thursday night.
“Amazing,” Erika Francisco said of the feeling after scoring two goals in the overtime to lift the Patriots.
Goalie Monique Caballero had a huge game for Birmingham blocking shots.
Eagle Rock had tied the match, 5-5, with 11 seconds left in regulation but Birmingham kept up its strong defensive pressure.
