The awards don’t get more prestigious than the CIF/Farmers state male scholar athlete of the year, and Kelly Blake of Loyola is this year’s recipient.
He will travel to the State Capitol in Sacramento on May 26 for a special event.
The combination of Blake’s tremendous performances on and off the field made him an obvious choice.
He was a first-team all-Mission League football selection, starring at receiver and defensive back for the Cubs. He also has a 4.5 grade-point average this year and scored 35 out of 36 on the ACT. He plans to attend Stanford in the fall.
He will receive a $5,000 scholarship for his selection.
“I took a lot of classes that were challenging and tried to do my best in all of them,” Blake said.
Section winners from the City Section were Louis Palmero Marquez from Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise and Delaney Arth from Palisades.
From the Southern Section, the winners are Kyle Trieu of Walnut and Lindsay Masukawa of Cypress.
The female scholars athlete of the year is Sophia Brown from Foothill in the North Coast Section.
