Track: Canoga Park’s Deonte Perry qualifies in City Section 100

Given a second chance, Canoga Park’s Deonte Perry took advantage, coming in second among the qualifiers in the 100 meters with a time of 10.73 at Thursday’s City Section prelims at Cerritos College.
Perry had been disqualified at last week’s Valley Mission League finals because of a false start and had to wait to see if there would be an opening for him to run.
Santee’s Sheldon Arnold led the qualifiers with a time of 10.71. Chatsworth freshman Daniel Kamulali was third at 10.92. Junior Ryan Hall of Carson led in the 200 at 21.48. Perrey ran 21.64.
Carson’s Justin Collins, who has the fastest time in the state in the 300 hurdles, qualified in 36.76. Crenshaw’s Justin Alexander ran 37.14. Brandon Hasson of Carson, a top 400 runner, injured himself in the 200 and might not make next week’s final.
Among girls, Palisades’ Marissa Williams is focusing on the distance races. She was first in the 1,600 (5:00.83) and the 3,200 (10.41.11). Carson’s Jeanette Paul cruised to the top time in the 300 hurdles at 43.13.
The girls lost one of their top competitors, Nia Toliver of View Park. She had to scratch from the 100, 200 and 400 because of a hamstring injury.
Next week’s finals are set for Cerritos College on Thursday, with field events at 2:30 p.m. and running at 5 p.m.
