World of Outlaws racing makes lone Southern California stop

The World of Outlaws, a popular racing series featuring high-powered sprint cars in close quarters, makes its only Southern California stop Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway in Riverside County.
Qualifying and then racing in the “SoCal Showdown” at the half-mile Perris dirt track are scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m.
The field is expected to include the four drivers currently leading the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series title standings: Daryn Pittman, Paul McMahan, Joey Saldana -- who won the Perris event a year ago -- and Sammy Swindell.
World of Outlaws cars are open-wheel sprint cars featuring large adjustable wings on top, with the drivers routinely veering widely as they maneuver through the turns.
Two of NASCAR stock-car racing’s leading drivers, Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne, own World of Outlaws teams, and the points leader Pittman drives for Kahne.
