The Sparks’ 90-88 double-overtime win over Tulsa on Sunday was exciting, so exciting that even some of the players got a bit carried away.
With 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Nneka Ogwumike made a layup, giving the Sparks a three-point lead.
Candace Parker ran over to Ogwumike to celebrate. But while hugging her, Parker accidentally head-butted her teammate.
The contact opened a massive gash above Ogwumike’s eye, sending blood pouring down her face.
Ogwumike, however, recovered quickly. She scored six consecutive points in the second overtime and finished with 21 points. Parker had 26 points and 11 rebounds.
“I think everything ended up working out well,” Parker said. “We ended up coming out with a victory. I was proud.”
The Sparks, who have won eight of their last nine games, including a 91-78 win over Connecticut on Tuesday, are in second place in the Western Conference, one game behind Minnesota with six games left in the season.
The Sparks will go on a four-game trip before retuning to Staples Center to finish the season with two home games.
