Rams mailbag: Jared Goff gets the start, but what’s wrong with Todd Gurley?

Rookie quarterback Jared Goff will make his debut Sunday when the Rams play the Miami Dolphins at the Coliseum.

Coach Jeff Fisher finally made the decision to play Goff in place of veteran Case Keenum after the Rams defeated the New York Jets, 9-3, last week at East Rutherford, N.J. The victory ended a four-game losing streak and improved the Rams’ record to 4-5.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke was at MetLife Stadium and saw his team fail to score a touchdown in the victory over the Jets.

The decision about who plays is left to Fisher, but you can be sure that Kroenke, General Manager Les Snead and Kevin Demoff, the vice president of football operations, are regularly talking about issues such as the quarterback.

Fisher, for weeks, had adamantly said that Case Keenum was not the issue.

And then, suddenly it seemed, he determined that Goff had made enough progress to play.

Perhaps the best way to describe it would be an organizational decision.

Rams running back Todd Gurley, last season’s NFL offensive rookie of the year in 2015, has struggled to break free so just about everything is on the table.

Gurley has not had many opportunities to get past the line of scrimmage to fend off arm tackles.

And when he has, such as last week on a long run against the Jets, the play has been nullified because of a penalty.

Poor blocking? Gurley’s impatience? Weight loss?

Todd Gurley has played the last few weeks with what the Rams have described as a thigh issue.

The “vision problem” might be in regard to the difficulties he has encountered finding running room. In the Rams’ offensive scheme, Gurley doesn’t simply run straight ahead into a hole that is supposed to be created by the offensive line. At times, he must decide when to make a cut.

No changes in the offensive line appear to be forthcoming, though injuries could change that.

Center Tim Barnes has been slowed by a foot injury so Demetrius Rhaney would step in if Barnes could not play.

Cody Wichmann and Jamon Brown continue to share time at right guard.

Left tackle Greg Robinson, left guard Rodger Saffold and right tackle Rob Havenstein have started all season.

Defensive end Robert Quinn was hospitalized the day after the victory over the Jets for what he described as a dehydration issue.

Quinn was on site at the Rams training facility the day after the episode and he returned to practice Friday.

He indicated that it would probably be a game-time decision based on how he feels, what the doctors say and what Fisher determines.

This question, I believe, was in response to a photo of the architect’s model of the Rams’ stadium complex, which was displayed at last week’s ground-breaking ceremony in Inglewood.

It is rather large, and it probably would take some work to make it fit into a 2003 Toyota Sienna, which doubles as the Mobile Podcast Studio.

But I think colleague Lindsey Thiry and I could make it work.

In a typical week, the Rams are on the field for official practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

They also do a walk-through on the field on Saturday.

They are rarely, if ever, in the full gear you would see on a game day.

Players are in some form of film study just about every day.

Singer Britney Spears attended practice last week with her sons.

She stayed about 100 yards away from media, so I could not tell you if she had hair extensions or how they looked.

I can say that Lindsey and a Rams staffer of a similar generation were absolutely thrilled that one of the idols of their youth was in their presence.

Well, someone definitely wants to sell more hot dog buns.

I know I have fallen victim to the ploy.

You buy the extra bag of buns so you have enough for the hot dogs, keep the leftovers in the bag on the kitchen counter and then find them covered in mold days later.

Whoever came up with that buns-to-dogs ratio must surely be in the marketing hall of fame.
