Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson makes a strong return from injury

Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson anticipated an early test — and he got it.

Johnson, who missed two-plus games because of an ankle injury, started in Sunday’s 13-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Quarterback Cam Newton went right after Johnson on the Panthers’ first play.

“I expected it — why wouldn’t he?” said Johnson, who provided tight coverage on an incomplete pass to receiver Devin Funchess. “You’ve got to go after the injured corner. “

Johnson’s return helped solidify a defense that gave up only one touchdown.

He made four tackles and helped neutralize receiver Kelvin Benjamin, who had five catches.

Johnson is still working to return to full speed.

“I’ve just got to strengthen it more,” he said of his ankle. “For the most part, I should be good.”
