Angels’ C.J. Wilson has rough performance in loss to Kansas City

Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson had a rough outing against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday at Angel Stadium.

Wilson allowed nine hits and seven runs -- six earned -- over 5 2/3 innings during the Angels’ 9-2 loss to the Royals.

The Royals swept the three-game series and now have defeated the Angels six consecutive times, dating to the American League Championship Series last October.

Wilson, who was given a 1-0 lead, had four strikeouts, an intentional walk, one wild pitch, and hit a batter. He threw 94 pitches, 57 for strikes.

He gave up four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning, putting the Angels in a 4-1 hole.

Wilson opened the inning by allowing three consecutive singles, the last by Salvador Perez, who drove in the first run.

An error by third baseman David Freese allowed the Royals to score their second run, and a two-run double by Alcides Escobar pushed in the next two.

Albert Pujols hit a home run over the left-field wall to give the Angels a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Pujols had entered the game batting .105, but he drilled Yordano Ventura’s 0-1 pitch for his second home run of the young season.

Pujols now has 522 home runs in his career, moving him to 18th on the major-league’s all-time home run list.

Kole Calhoun didn’t play Sunday because of what Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said was tightness in his right calf.
