Jets consider color-coded play-calling system for rookie Geno Smith

Jets Coach Rex Ryan is considering a color-coded play-calling system for rookie quarterback Geno Smith, who has 11 turnovers in four games this season.

After giving Smith a vote of confidence earlier this week by saying there was no consideration to bench the first-year player, Ryan did mention Wednesday that there was one way to help Smith.

The plays listed on Smith’s wristband could be under three categories: green for aggressive, yellow for cautious and red for conservative.

This isn’t a drastic measure for the Jets and Ryan. They did the same thing for Mark Sanchez when he was a rookie. It helped them get to the AFC championship game as Sanchez developed a feel for the game.

“Hey, whatever it takes,” Ryan said. “I’ve been thinking about it. There’s a fine line between being aggressive and being smart with it as well.”

Smith’s 11 turnovers -- eight interceptions and three fumbles -- tie him with Giants quarterback Eli Manning for most in the NFL.

“Protecting the football is the No. 1 thing, along with penalties,” Ryan said.
