INDIANAPOLIS -- A three-wide finish in motor racing is thrilling. But four wide?
Peter Dempsey won the Freedom 100 by mere inches Friday in the Firestone Indy Lights series at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Gabby Chaves finished second, Sage Karam was third and Carlos Munoz finished fourth.
They were already was three-wide coming to the checkered flag when Dempsey came up behind them. Dempsey then veered right to the outside lane to make it four wide and won by a nose.
“I had it all planned from about two months ago,” Dempsey quipped.
His margin of victory: 0.0026 seconds.
The Firestone Indy Lights series is a second-level series to the Izod IndyCar Series, which is set to hold the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.
