‘Superbad’ talent shows that dressing up can be good

With summer’s biggest blockbusters come Hollywood’s sloppiest stars.

In the past couple of months, actors have been spotted at movie premieres wearing variations of beach volleyball attire that include cargo shorts, baggy tee shirts, and baseball caps. Adam Sandler looked as if he had just returned from a Sandals resort at the “Evan Almighty” premiere back in June. (For his own premiere of “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” a month later, he went all out with a pair of khakis.)

But last night at the “Superbad” debut, the film’s social underdogs, Michael Cera and Jonah Hill, proved that just a dab of sartorial prowess goes a long way on the red carpet. Both actors -- along with producers Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen -- showed up wearing not just shirts that actually button, but neckties too. Rogen opted for a preppy rep tie, while Apatow went with the more modern skinny cravat. Awkward costar Hill managed to conform and rebel in the very same outfit by pairing an untucked white button-down with a tie as wide as a trout. The group didn’t look as uniformly natty as the Rat Pack, but their efforts lent a much-welcomed breath of formality. Let’s hope their peers take notice.
