Ojai Storytelling Festival
When, where: May 5-8, Ojai Art Center and Chaparral High School
Highlights: Some of America’s best storytellers weave tales of comedy, myth, suspense and adventure. Now in its 12th year, the event also features a Beatles-inspired musical picnic, workshops, dinners and a special Mother’s Day performance.

National Public Gardens Day
When, where: May 6, more than 500 gardens
Highlights: Hundreds of green spaces — including La Cañada Flintridge’s Descanso Gardens, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers and the Albuquerque BioPark Botanic Garden — offer free admission. Each venue hosts unique (and often child-friendly) activities.
