Reporting from New Orleans — An outlet mall with designer duds from Neiman Marcus’ Last Call Studio, purses from Coach, shoes from Steve Madden and more than 50 factory stores is set to open Thursday in downtown New Orleans.
The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, touted as the first urban outlet center in the country, will be across Canal Street from the French Quarter and directly beside the Mississippi River, putting it squarely on the tourist radar.
Sailing from New Orleans on Royal Caribbean, Carnival or NCL? Take an elevator from the Julia Street Cruise Terminal to Riverwalk’s top-floor food court.
Need a break from blackjack at Harrah’s New Orleans Casino? Walk across Spanish Plaza to shop and nosh at Riverwalk.
Nodding off at a meeting in Ernest N. Morial Convention Center? The mall is across the street. The New Orleans Hilton Riverside rises above it.
After a more than $70-million renovation and a 50,000-foot expansion, the 250,000-square-foot mall now extends from Spanish Plaza to the convention center. It has 23 food outlets, including Cafe du Monde (coffee and beignets) and the “coming soon” Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill.
The original Riverwalk Marketplace, a shopping/food/entertainment center, opened in 1986, on the site of the International Pavilion of the 1984 World’s Fair. Damaged economically by Hurricane Katrina and the recession, it found its new incarnation through Howard Hughes Corp. -- a corporate descendant of the company run by the aviator, playboy, business magnate and eventual recluse.
Riverwalk will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day but Sunday, when it closes at 7 pm.
