Start shredding the news: Big Bear kicking off snowboard season

Time for big air in Big Bear.
The (extremely) unofficial kickoff to California’s snowboarding season comes on Saturday, with Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails, the annual Bear Mountain competition.
Professional snowboarders will compete on machine-made snow for a piece of the $16,000 purse. The party starts at 10 a.m., with the first heat at 2 p.m. The event is totally free.
Who: Top pros, including Zak Hale, Scott Vine, Dylan Alito, Brandon Hobush and Jordan Small
What: 50 of the world’s best snowboarders competing in the first major North American event of the season, jumping, jibbing, grinding and sliding around.
What else: Live music, vendor giveaways, and food and drink specials add to the party. Crowds approaching 10,000 are expected.
About: The event, now in its 12th year, includes 11 features. The course takes a month to build, including four weeks of fabrication (such as building the rails and jumps), three weeks of dirt work and 140 tons of snow. For reference, when the event started, only 40 tons of snow were needed.
Cost: Free admission and parking.
