Newcomb’s Ranch on Angeles Crest celebrating 75th year

The iconic roadhouse Newcomb’s Ranch is turning 75 this month, and the rustic Angeles Crest getaway is celebrating this Sunday with the things it does well: bikes, comfort food and good old-fashioned conviviality.
“It’s going to be crazy, I think,” says Newcomb’s manager, Fred Rundall III, who is organizing the celebration. Festivities run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the bar/restaurant, located at mile marker 50.93 on Angeles Crest Highway.
One of the highlights will be a special guest appearance by singer Rocco DeLuca, performing from noon to 1 p.m. The barbecue starts at 11 a.m., Rundall says.
The event will also feature vendors, test rides and search-and-rescue demos. Several L.A. motorcycle shops are planning to mark the occasion with group rides.
Located at 5,400 feet, up the Angeles Crest Highway from La Cañada, Newcomb’s Ranch opened in 1939, serving as a general store and watering hole. Mountain man Lynn Newcomb Jr. ran it for many years, before selling it to a local doctor. Today, Newcomb’s Ranch is owned by the Rundall family, which stuck with it through difficult times after the 2009 Station fire.
Open every day of the year, it attracts hikers and bikers to what is one of the finer Sunday drives around. Sure, that stretch north of Malibu, up toward Neptune’s Net, offers great seascapes, as does the Rock Store, on the way to Calabasas.
But for alpine vistas, fox, deer, bighorn sheep and Ferrari and Ducati sightings, Newcomb’s Ranch stands out — a time capsule at 5,400 feet, dressed in cedar and old bikers.
