Driving versus flying from Los Angeles

We’ve calculated the cost of a trip by car and plane, based on the AAA’s national price of $3.63 a gallon, using 27.5 miles per gallon, the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, and calculating the number of miles from Los Angeles to the destination, round trip, using Google maps. Airfares are from LAX and were researched using the Sabre system and the Web.
Roundtrip from LAX to:
San Francisco: $101 to drive; 178 to fly.
Portland, Ore.: $250 to drive; $298 to fly.
Phoenix: $98 to drive; $118 to fly.
Denver: $268 to drive; $266 to fly.
