Japan: Tourism officials offer L.A.-Tokyo airfare-hotel package for an amazing $780

Japan‘s tourism office has partnered with airlines and hotels to offer an incredible price on a trip to Tokyo on selected dates in June. The package includes accommodations for four nights plus round-trip airfare from Los Angeles and other gateway cities for just $780 a person. In addition, $50 per reservation is donated to the consulate-general of Japan to aid in the recovery effort. For this deal, tickets must be bought by Tuesday.

The deal: Tourism to Japan has dropped by more than 60% since the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear reactor leaks, according to the Japan National Tourist Organization. Now the agency seeks to give visitors a reason to return. You can find lots of updates on security, transporation, attractions, etc., on the agency’s website.

The four-night package includes flights from Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Honolulu for $780 a person, including taxes and fees. Six travel agencies are handling reservations; tickets are unchangeable and nonrefundable.

Flights depart from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on June 1 and 2, 7-9, 14-16, 22 and 23 and 29 and 30. This package can be booked up to seven days before travel, depending on availability.

When: The package must be booked by 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Tested: I called IACE Travel in Los Angeles [(310) 323-5551], one of the travel agencies listed on the tourism site’s Web page, to start my search. The package was sold out for June 8 and 9 but I did find availability for June 14. The flight from Los Angeles to Haneda Airport was aboard ANA. By comparison, round-trip airfare alone on the same dates would cost more than $900 a person, according to a search on Kayak.com.

Travel alert: The U.S. State Department renewed a travel alert for Japan on May 16. It says Americans face no safety or health risk as long as they remain outside the 50-mile evacuation zone connected with radiation leaks at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The alert expires July 15.
