Maldives: Park the jet, then park yourself at Shangri-La resort

Well-heeled travelers bound for the turquoise waters and white sand beaches of the Maldive Islands now have a new place to park their private jets. Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa has put paradise on the radar with a private jet airport terminal.
The terminal, at Gan International Airport in Addu Atoll, is a five-minute speedboat ride to the resort and is for the exclusive arrival and departure of the resort’s guests. A private lounge offers one-stop immigration, custom and baggage screening services.
“With Gan airport, we have found the ideal partner to provide guests arriving by private jet a unique experience, unmatched convenience and privacy,” said Rene D. Egle, the resort’s general manager.
Guests taking advantage of the new private jet terminal also can try the resort’s “Private Jet Experience,” which features a stay in a 10,000-square-foot presidential villa with a butler and daily massage.
Staying at the villa is not for the budget-minded. The regular rate for Villa Lallu, the presidential suite, is $9,900 a night. Standard rates at the resort start at $975 a night for a pool villa.
The Indian Ocean resort, which is surrounded by a coral reef, has more than three miles of coastline and more than a mile of beaches. It offers a nine-hole golf course plus cultural bicycle tours on neighboring islands.
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts owns or manages 78 hotels under the Shangri-La, Kerry and Traders brands with a room inventory of more than 32,000. Shangri-La hotels feature extensive upscale facilities and services.
