Walk in the footsteps of the ancients in little-known Macedonia

Alexander the Great slept here -- and lived here too. The place is Macedonia, which was part of Greece in ancient times. Most recently, it has been working to raise its tourism profile after its break from the former Yugoslavia more than two decades ago.
Tour company Macedonia Experience, based in the city of Skopje, is part of the effort to put the nation on the European tourism map. It offers many active and leisure trips around the country, including an eight-day tour that canvasses the country and its culture. The tour begins with sightseeing in Skopje and the area, places like Lake Matka as well as churches and Byzantine monasteries in the village Gorno Nerezi.
Other days highlight mountain cultures in and around Mavrovo National Park and a visit to Ohrid, a UNESCO heritage site (with a lake of the same name) known for its early monasteries, Roman amphitheater and early human settlements. The trip ends with a visit to the archaeologically rich town of Bitola before returning to Skopje.

Price: 1,200 euro (about $1,622) per person, double occupancy (it may be lower, depending on the number of participants). It includes ground transportation, airport transfers, hotels and meals, English-speaking tour guide. International airfare is extra.
