The World Series of Cutting brings horses and riders to South Point

Reporting from Las Vegas — Equestrian events return to the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center through Sunday, when the cutting world’s top riders compete in the Mercuria World Series of Cutting. Saturday brings the free Mane Event championship.
The equestrian event judges horses and riders on their ability to separate a single cow from a cattle herd and keep it separate.
“The NCHA Mercuria World Series of Cutting is a special competition showcasing the art of the sport through precision and great horsemanship,” says Paula Gaughan, wife of South Point Hotel owner Michael Gaughan, in a statement.
“Western cutting is a sport that takes a great amount of skill and talent, and we are adding the Mane Event this weekend to showcase the best of the best, a select group of individuals who truly are the core of this sport.”
Equestrian riders compete on horses that are 3 to 6 years old. There are 10 to 12 events daily with up to $89,000 in prizes.
The Western Gift Show in the arena’s concourse carries Western-lifestyle items such as jewelry, shirts, boots, hats and more.
