Beach closes after sewage spill

Orange County Environmental Health closed 300 feet of the

coastline near Thousand Steps beach last Friday after 500 gallons of

sewage spilled from a break in private lines, said Larry Honeybourne

of Environmental Health.

During a routine inspection of the sewer line, South Coast Water

District discovered a broken line that caused sewage from two or

three homes to contaminate the water, Honeybourne said.

Environmental Health reopened the beach on Sunday, Honeybourne

said.

Police search for three suspects

Police searched homes and beachfront in lower Three Arch Bay for

two hours Tuesday, looking for three suspects who fled from a truck

containing a stolen motorized bicycle, police said.

A resident called police at 4:25 p.m. after spotting several

people that matched the description of those involved in a previous

burglary in the area, said Sgt. Eric Lee.

While officers were on their way, the suspects attempted to drive

out of the gated community, but were blocked by residents’ cars, Lee

said.

The suspects, two men and one woman described as being in their

mid-20s, fled from a green pickup truck and took off on foot away

from the main gate, Lee said.

Police established a perimeter and employed a police helicopter

and a Newport Beach Police K-9 unit to assist in the search, Lee

said.

Officers and detectives went door-to-door, searching homes and

secluded beach coves, Lee said.

After a half-hour of searching, police located one of the

suspects. The suspect in custody revealed the identity of the other

two suspects, one of whom has a felony warrant outstanding, Lee said.

After two hours, police ended the search. The two remaining

suspects have not been located, Lee said. Police are not releasing

information about the suspect in custody because it is an on-going

investigation, Lee said.

Firefighters host benefit dinner

The Laguna Beach Firefighters’ Assn. will hold a benefit dinner

from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Mosun, 680 S. Coast Highway, to raise

money for city employee Jose Bernal who is suffering from cancer.

Bernal has worked with the city’s Public Works Department for 22

years and has recently lost working hours and income due to his

illness. Local firefighters have already donated some of their

personal vacation days to Bernal. Mosun is open to the public during

the benefit and the restaurant will donate a large portion of the

night’s proceeds toward the benefit. Information: (949)0 460-4068 or
