Coyotes stuff Eagles, deny them first win

The Estancia High football team saw its struggles with the running
game go from bad to worse Friday night as host Buena Park held the
Eagles to minus-46 yards rushing in a 17-8 Coyotes victory.
The Eagles did manage 82 passing yards, but managed its only
touchdown when Matt Redding stripped the ball from a Buena Park
running back and returned the fumble 20 yards for with 7:19 left in
the game.
“We didn’t come to play football tonight,” said Estancia Coach
Brian Barnes, whose team fell to 0-3 and now has minus-24 yards
rushing this season.
“I think the kids took it for granted, because Buena Park was a
team they beat last year.”
The Coyotes ended a 15-game losing streak with a season-opening
overtime victory over Century last week. Estancia topped Buena Park,
19-0, last fall.
Buena Park opened the scoring with a 29-yard field goal by Ricardo
Garcia with 9:23 left in the first quarter.
The Coyotes drove 64 yards on seven plays to produce their first
touchdown, with Gabe Williams ran 1 yard up the middle for a 9-0 lead
with 4:11 left in the first quarter.
Garcia kicked the first of his two extra points to make it 10-0.
Estancia senior quarterback Ryan Watson was, once again,
productive through the air. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 82 yards.
Redding caught four passes for 56 yards and tailback Edgar Vargas
added a pair of receptions fo 19 yards.
The Estancia defense was not without its moments, though Buena
Park collected 242 rushing yards.
Williams led the Coyotes with 91 yards on 21 attempts.
Buena Park quarterback Elvis Oropeza completed 4 of 7 for 46 yards
to aid the winners.
