UCI claims seventh place

Junior Tim Hutten scored three of his game-high five goals in the
first quarter to lead No. 8-ranked UC Irvine to a 7-6 win over Long
Beach State in the seventh-place game of the Southern California
tournament Sunday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Hutten scored the trio of goals in the first five minutes of the
game to give the Anteaters a 3-0 lead.
Long Beach State’s Jay Gerardi scored with 6:24 left in regulation
to tie the game, 6-6, before Hutten scored the game-winner in an
extra-man situation with 4:11 remaining.
Brent McCleave led the 49ers (9-3) with three goals.
The Anteaters (5-4) lost, 7-4, to Pepperdine in the fifth-place
semifinals earlier Sunday.
Senior Dreason Barry had three goals for the ‘Eaters against the
Waves.

Braves edge Anteaters
* SOCCER: Host Bradley scored the lone goal in the 21st minute to
hand the UC Irvine men’s soccer team a 1-0 defeat in the Bradley
Classic Sunday night.
The Anteaters (1-3-2) outshot the Braves, 22-10, but were unable
to get one past goalkeeper Chris Dunsheath, who had four saves to
record the shutout and earn tournament Most Valuable Player
recognition.
Bradley, which won the tournament title, improved to 5-2-0.
UCI junior Cameron Dunn and freshman teammate David Sais were
named to the all-tournament team.
UCI falls to Nebraska
* SOCCER: The visiting UC Irvine women’s soccer team lost, 2-1,
Sunday afternoon to No. 19-ranked Nebraksa.
The Anteaters (1-6-1) took a 1-0 lead just 2 minutes, 5 seconds
into the match as freshman Megan Ortiz capitalized on a defensive
miscue to score her third goal of the season.
But the hosts (5-3) pulled even in the eighth minute as Selenia
Iacchelli scored on a Brittany Timko assist. Nebraska took a 2-1 lead
in the 12th minute as Timko scored on a breakaway knocking the ball
past freshman keeper Rosie Aguilera.
Aguilera had a career-high eight saves for the Anteaters, who
forced Nebraska goalkeeper Jamie Klages to make two saves.
UCI plays host to San Diego Friday at 6 p.m. in the opening game
of a doubleheader with the UCI men’s team, which will face UC Davis
at 8.
