Squires leads UCI in five-game victory

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sophomore outside hitter Aly Squires amassed 26 kills, 20 digs and five blocks to help the Anteaters earn a 19-25, 28-30, 26-24, 25-21, 15-13 win over Portland State in the Lobo Invitational on Saturday.
Junior libero Kristin Winkler set a UCI single-match record with 34 digs.
Shaina Olsen had 14 kills and 14 digs for UCI (4-4), for which Marissa Alvarez had 29 assists and Shannon Fleming had 11 block assists.
Earlier Saturday, UCI won an exhibition match with a team from Montreal, Canada, 25-13, 22-25, 25-18, 25-11, behind 10 kills, eight block assists and a .429 hitting percentage from Arielle Manz.
Fleming (nine kills and a .450 hitting percentage) and Mary Carls (32 assists) also stood out against Montreal.

SAN DIEGO — Vanguard University won two matches Saturday at Point Loma Nazarene to improve to 11-4.
The Lions defeated McKendree of Illinois, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, behind 23 kills from Newport Harbor High product Jamie Heenan and 43 assists from Alexandra Leja.
No. 17-ranked Vanguard then swept Our Lady of the Lakes, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15, led by nine kills each from Heenan and Stevie Hurlbirt.
Lisa Morgan had 10 digs for the Lions.

Doubleheader
IRVINE — UC Irvine topped UC Santa Barbara, 13-8, and Chapman, 16-4, in a pair of nonconference home games on Saturday.
Nick Pfiel had a career-high four goals and Max Parrague added three against UCSB.
Alan Robertson and Kyle Kittlitz had three goals apiece against Chapman.
The two wins up No. 8-ranked UCI’s record to 5-0.

Inland Empire Tournament
LA VERNE — Vanguard University split a pair of contests, topping La Verne, 15-5, and falling to Long Beach State, 16-5, at Las Flores Park on Saturday.
Freshman Jason Lee had five goals for the Lions against La Verne, while Israel Perez, Joseph Sanders and Kyle Kim-E had two apiece.

UC Irvine invitational
IRVINE — Junior Rex Nelson, a Newport Harbor High product, finished eighth in 25 minutes, 31.5 seconds over the 8,000-meter course to pace UC Irvine to a fourth-place team finish Saturday.
Steven Melena (10th in 25:38.2), Brennen Halliday (36th in 26:14.8) and Ryan McMonigle (40th in 26:18.7) also cracked the top 40 for the Anteaters.
UCI’s 125 points were 59 off the pace of Cal State San Marcos, which topped the 13-school field.
Matt Johnson (25th in 25:56.7) and Tyler Dutchover (37th in 26:15.2) led Vanguard to a 10th-place showing.

UC Irvine invitational
IRVINE — Senior Melissa Mead, a Newport Harbor High product, finished 24th in 18 minutes, 26.5 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to lead UC Irvine, which finished ninth in the 16-team field.
Chloe Fata was 36th in 18:46.2 to help UCI, which collected 214 points.
Victorious Cal Poly San Luis Obispo had 38 points.
